I used to love the Saturday afternoon matinees on tv. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, Elvis Presley, Abbott and Costello, Marx Brothers..
The Marx Brothers were a favourite, though I was always confused by Harpo’s character. His comic antics in the movies were always a stark contrast to the intensity of his harp playing, which at the time was an opportunity to go get a drink or something..
This image of the Melbourne Convention Centre reminds me of a harp visually. Being fairly ignorant of harpists I decided to revisit Harpo Marx via YouTube and was awestruck by his musicianship!
His outstanding ability and beautiful melodies were hypnotic. I felt inspired by his playing and upset that my preteen self thought little of him so many years ago.
If you’re not familiar with his playing, or are just keen on a refresher, check this out..
